What are vitamins and minerals?

Vitamins are complex chemicals that help to regulate metabolism and help the brain, nerves, muscles, skin, and bones function properly.  The major vitamins are A, B, C, D, E, K, B-12, and seven B complex vitamins.  Minerals are necessary in very small amounts for the body to function properly.  For example, calcium is necessary for healthy teeth and bones, and zinc and magnesium are needed to control cell metabolism.  Vitamins and minerals are found in many foods, especially milk, cheese, green leafy vegetables, fish, meat, and poultry.

Do I need to take a multivitamin?

The best source of needed nutrients is a balanced diet. Clinical studies have shown that even persons observing well balanced diets have significant deficiencies of certain minerals and vitamins.  Doctors continue to recommend multivitamins for people whose health conditions, dietary choices, lifestyle habits or medications impede their bodies' ability to get or absorb proper amounts of key nutrients from foods.  By taking into account the latest scientific recommendations, Socle creates a superior multivitamin ideal to meet your nutritional needs.

Which multivitamin is best to take?

There is an important difference between the "science" of supplements and the "marketing" of them.  Considerations when selecting a multivitamin are:

Presence of competing ingredients

The presence of certain ingredients will compete with each other and reduce absorption.  This is the case with calcium in the presence of magnesium, zinc, phosphorous, and iron, reducing absorption of these important minerals.  This is a simple fact of mineral science often overlooked by vitamin producers. Most multivitamins will have calcium in them. Reducing absorption of these other minerals makes that particular multivitamin less than ideal. Look at the ingredient label of your multivitamin. If there is calcium listed, absorption will be inadequate.  Socle removes calcium from its multivitamin because of this.

Appropriate dosing

Labels should indicate that the multivitamin includes 100 percent of the Daily Value (DV) of most essential nutrients. Large doses (megadosing is taking more than recommended) of nutrients should be avoided because of possible health risks.  On the other hand, low doses can create deficiencies. Socle provides the correct doses for healthy living.

Appropriate ingredients

Extra ingredients such as herbs, enzymes and amino acids that are touted as a "proprietary blend" should be avoided because of possible health risks. Herbs can also interact negatively with medications.  Socle only provides the necessary ingredients for healthy living.

Multivitamins that contain preformed vitamin A (often listed as retinol or vitamin A palmitate or acetate) should be avoided.  In this form they can build up in the body and harm the liver or increase the risk of hip fracture.  Vitamin A as mixed carotenoids (beta carotene, alpha carotene, lutein, lycopene) are converted into usable retinoids by the body and appear to have no toxicity. This is the form used in Socle Multivitamin.

There is generally no reason to take iron unless you have been diagosed with iron deficiency anemia.  Getting too much iron can lead to excess oxidation which is associated with increased heart disease and cancer.  The small doses usually supplied in a multivitamin are a common cause of nausea and constipation with very little health benefit.  Socle multivitamin does not contain iron for these reasons.

Absorption

Besides the issue of competing ingredients, absorption of minerals is improved by proper chelation. By attaching minerals to the proper chelating agent, Socle cretaes a superior product.

The Socle Brand recognizes the importance of the science of minerals and vitamins and addresses all these concerns.  Because of the emphasis on absorption and science, the Socle Brand is recommended first as the ideal multivitamin.

To make certain you are absorbing everything in your multivitamin, insist on the Socle Multi-Vitamin.  Besides the multivitamin, Socle has several other products that have unique advantages over other brands.

Why doesn't Socle Multi-Vitamin have 100% of Vitamin K?

Vitamin K is used by our liver for synthesis of blood coagulation factors.  In susceptible persons, too much Vitamin K can lead to thrombosis (blood clots).  The majority of persons obtain enough Vitamin K in their diets.  Vitamin K is obtained from dietary sources, such as leafy green vegetables, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, plant oils, margarine, meat and cheeses and synthesis by bacteria in the colon.  Excess doses have been associated with gastrointestinal irritation. There have been cases of anemia and thrombocytopenia (low platelets).  Patients taking Coumadin (warfarin) need to be especially careful of too much Vitamin K.   Excessive vitamin K intake, either from supplements or from changes in the diet, can reduce the anticoagulation effect of Coumadin.  Some other vitamins provide in excess of 150% or more of Vitamin K.  Socle products are safer by reducing the amount of Vitamin K.

Is input from a docor needed?

Yes. Physicians need to know about vitamins and supplements their patients take because some may not be recommended with certain health conditions. A doctor also can advise when certain supplements could provide health benefits based on the patient's age, health and diet.  Socle supplements are formulated by a physician with the necessary knowledge to formulate vitamins for healthy living.

When is the best time to take the Socle Multi-Vitamin?

The Socle Multi-Vitamin can be taken any time of day.  However, it should not be taken at the same time with calcium due to the influence calcium has on the other mineral salts (read above under "Which multivitamin is best to take?").  This includes taking it with milk since the calcium in milk will also influence absorption, as well as at the same time as a calcium supplement.  Most persons find it most convenient to dose the Socle Multi-Vitamin at night since they are not taking anything else with a calcium source at that time.
